About
Our Director
Sekiya Dorsett is a passionate filmmaker from the Bahamas living in Brooklyn. Her thought-provoking films have won her much praise, including "The Revival: Women and the Word," which premiered in 2017 and was quickly acquired by Women Make Movies. Sekiya also directed a remarkable four-episode documentary series for NBC News entitled "Stonewall 50: The Revolution" to commemorate Stonewall's influential uprising—an achievement that earned her both a GLAAD Media Award and NLGJA’s Excellence in Digital Journalism accolade. Recently, Sekiya was one of the cinematographers who brought "In Our Mother's Gardens" to life on Netflix: a masterpiece of intergenerational Black women's confessional storytelling. In 2022, Barnard College named her their inaugural Artemis Rising Foundation Fellow for excellence in non-fiction storytelling. Her films have been screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, the Urbanworld Film Festival, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Outfest Film Festival. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College and teaches at Hofstra University. She is a fierce champion for her hometown, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The iconic neighborhood is the main character in her next project, I LOVE BED-STUY, a docu-fiction feature-length love story and a love letter to Brooklyn's iconic neighborhood.
